Stupid Laws: No Smoking, Unless It's Marijuana

When the Dutch ban on smoking in public places went into force last year it had a curious side effect, said Frederik Hartig in Germany's Der Spiegel.  In the 700 or so coffee shops in the Netherlands that are legally entitled to sell marijuana, you're still allowed to light up a joint, but only if there is no tobacco in it.

Legal Marijuana @ 11:46 am

Indeed..a very stupid law! This why politicians should think through any idea of change, or low. Especially in such a debated matter, like legal marijuana.

Kathy from san diego personal injury attorney @ 1:50 pm

LOL. Second hand highs are okay, I suppose.

Matt from Aussie commentary blog @ 6:03 am

Yes, this is pretty absurd. It reminds me of something I read in the paper some months back.

There has been some controversy about supervised heroin injecting rooms here in Sydney. One of the stories mentioned that smoking was not allowed in the rooms!

(Tried Googling for it, but couldn't find the article. However, I'm pretty sure my recollection is correct.)

Brian from Divorce Lawyer London @ 4:40 am

That's rediculous. Surely either both should be banned or neither. I have always found the Dutch to have some pretty strange laws.

Richard from Stop Smoking Programs @ 8:13 am

Wow… this is really one on the stupidest laws I have ever heard of…

Ryan from South Park real estate @ 7:34 pm

What a joke! No tobacco but marijuana is allowed? Woah! rubbish law, don't they cover it from each angle so this law can exist for a long time? Any updates on this law now?

I hate drugs and what they do to people and their livelihoods as well as their families who suffer with them. They screw people over and frequently give permanent psychological damage as well as physical damage to the body. The link that I have put below is relevant for; drug abuse, drug rehab, drug treatment, drug rehabilitation, drug recovery as well as alcohol treatment success. Good luck to everyone out there, I wish you luck in trying to quit.

James from drug addiction @ 5:01 pm

I think that this is ridiculous. WOW you can't smoke tobacco, but please do light up some "mary jane." I had a hard time staying on my seat reading this.

Nicky from Narconon @ 6:13 pm

Speaking of stupidity. The Dutch are known for their legalizing of street drugs and not admitting that they have a serious drug problem throughout the country. To legalize drugs does not solve the drug problem!

what a law it should be appreciated…..otherwise how can general public know about the stupid law…
this was really ridiculous…

jet from payday loans @ 6:39 am

the Govt. should not ban the smoking on public place. yes if it is more crowed one should not smoke there

joe from payday loans @ 6:42 am

I think Govt. Ban for smoking in a few place like train, bus stop, etc but can allow it on park or other vacant places.

Jon Marley from crate training @ 1:37 pm

Lol, this is a great law, atleast you can get high from the second hand smoke in the coffee shop, cigarette smoke just gives people headaches and is proven to be alot more harmful than marijuana smoke

January 23, 2010

immo132 from Real Estate Agent Quebec @ 7:20 am

that's too much is this a great example of dutch law??

sumit from Arbeidsrecht amsterdam @ 7:27 am

either both should be banned or not necessary to banned anything

January 27, 2010

Souhail from Stomach Liposuction @ 12:57 am

Research has shown that marijuana use lowers memory and other mental functions for up to a couple of days after smoking. If you smoke daily, or more, you may always be functioning at a below normal mental level.

February 15, 2010

Twisp from electric cigarette @ 4:47 am

Its quite funny that you are not allowed to smoke normal cigarettes yet you can smoke marajuana. At least now you can buy e-cigarettes which you can smoke anywhere.

February 20, 2010

Mark from electronic cigarettes @ 3:28 pm

Another well thought out law.

February 23, 2010

Gary from Teens can make money @ 7:57 pm

Tobacco has been proven to be worse for the human body than marijuana, so it makes sense.

February 26, 2010

Darren from Philippine call center @ 12:57 am

Just a guess, but I think it's because marijuana doesn't stink up the place the way tobacco does.

March 12, 2010

Ben from People Background Checks @ 6:49 am

Ha ha, that's ridiculous. You can smoke, but only if you smoke drugs that are illegal in the rest of the world. I love the Dutch :)

March 18, 2010

Kenny @ 9:20 am

hehe. i lol´d =)
it´s like a shisha-bar with a non-smokers room ;)

March 23, 2010

Rommel from Dubai Web Design @ 1:18 pm

I think marijuana is much dangerous than tabacco. In fact, marijuana is prohibited on other countries like Philippines.

March 26, 2010

Justin from Hemp Protein @ 9:51 pm

I think it's great that people are smoking cannabis instead of tobacco. Cannabis does not hurt you, unlike cannabis, so this is a sensible policy.

Jon Marley from Weed Guide @ 10:47 pm

This is pretty ridiculous. I suppose people prefer second hand weed smoke over second hand tobacco smoke. Atleast it's not as likely to give you cancer.

March 27, 2010

harry from unique gifts @ 7:11 am

On the face of it, the law appears sort of contradictory, (how can you justify one but not the other???). However this does give the Netherlands a good unique selling point, that i am certain will have had a positive effect on their tourism industry. The law could even have been put in place to deliberately create debate around the world, and further increase the numbers of visitors and intrigued investors.

mmm, food for thought, lol

thanks, h :)

William from free internet marketing ebook @ 11:27 pm

I can't say that I don't approve of the law =P. As a big proponent of marijuana, this law sounds pretty spot on to me.

Automatic Fire Suppression Systems @ 12:38 pm

It's a great day for the beginning of the new law though.

April 2, 2010

turbine fire protection @ 3:47 am

A ban on cigarette smoking in public places takes effect today, but people still will be able to light up in the country's cafes — as long as they are smoking pot. The nationwide tobacco ban is intended to protect workers from secondhand smoke in bars, cafes and restaurants.

Rommel from chicago limousine service @ 11:00 pm

It is really a non-sense law. Why should they prohibit smoking cigar where in smoking marijuana is allowable.

April 6, 2010

Mary from Private Residence Club @ 3:54 pm

Think about it, people that go to a coffee shop are there to use marijuana, so why would it be a problem to allow it as an exception. I am sure if they have any hookah bars, tobacco smoke is allowed there…

April 7, 2010

Weng from Limoges Boxes @ 1:25 pm

LOL…what a stupid law it is. I just can't get what they want to point out on that law.

April 9, 2010

Ryan @ 2:47 am

Damn stupid law! When will they ever learn hey lol.:D

April 13, 2010

Paula from Short term payday loans @ 9:00 am

They should both be banned. Unbelievable!

April 22, 2010

Rommel from chicago limo service @ 7:57 pm

What a weird law. I think what they must ban is the using of marijuana because it is much addictive than cigarette.

Mike from California Reverse Mortgage @ 8:56 pm

I can't believe for a minute that they'd allow marijuana but not cigarettes. What, like one is better for you than the other? Crazy..

April 24, 2010

jen from forex robot @ 3:15 pm

I dont know what does it mean ? marijuna but not tobacco sounds ridiculous!
